Even more amazing-the script’s writer is an oracle, able to trace her progeny’s stories forward in time from ancient Egypt through World War II. When she's called to Switzerland after the death of a famous manuscript collector, she makes an amazing discovery in his library: a manuscript dating back to the time of Cleopatra, written by the daughter of a librarian at the great Library of Alexandria. ![]() Semele Cavnow works for a prestigious New York auction house. It is her imagination that also compels readers to become more heavily invested within her stories as well, allowing her audience to almost escape into them. This will then provide them with a whole score of different stories, all in-depth, whilst appearing simple and easy to access upon the surface. Knowing exactly what it is that children are looking for when it comes to reading, she seeks to educate and entertain her young readers. The actual conflict, where Shana basically betrays Dane happens towards the end, so we don't get quite as much resolution as I think this conflict needed. So I ended up hunched over the Oxford English Dictionary (the kind you need a magnifying glass to read) for hours, looking up new definitions. The problem was, we discovered this after I’d written the book. This meant that all the definitions would have to come from the same dictionary, so that I could make only one application for permission. It turns out that dictionary definitions are not public domain, which meant I would have to apply for permission to use them in my book. ![]() ![]() Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly".
